Publications

CAMOC was set up in 2005 and it takes time to build up a range of publications by members.  However, we have thre notable publications to our credit.  The proceedings of our conference in Boston have been published by UNESCO's Museum International: Urban Life and Museums, Vol. 58. No 231 UNESCO September 2006, ISSN 1350-0775, Blackwell Publishing, Oxford, UK and Malden, MA, USA.   An edition has been published in Chinese and on-line editions have been published in French (Vie Urbaine et Musées) Spanish and Arabic : see museum

Finally, our eBook Our Greatest Artefact: the city published in December 2012

A book, City Museums and City Development, (ISBN:978-0-7591-1180-6) based on our conference in Vienna, and published by the AltaMira Press, is now out in print. It is edited by Ian Jones, Bob Macdonald and Darryl McIntyre. Click on www.altamirapress.com (then on What's new, on the home page) for details on how to order copies - there is a 15% discount for ICOM members. Some endorsements so far:

"Cities need museums like people need memories: not as a repository of their past, but as a token of their identity and a guide to the future. Here is a unique survey of city museums from the five continents, museums for global cities and modest country towns to stimulate discussion about their varied functions – from archive to development workshop."

Joseph Rykwert, Paul Philippe Cret Professor of Architecture Emeritus and Professor of Art History at the University of Pennsylvania and author, among other works, of The Seduction of Place: The City in the Twenty-First Century; The Idea of a Town: The Anthropology of Urban Form in Rome, Italy, and The Ancient World; The Dancing Column: On Order in Architecture.

This book brings together the latest thinking and scholarship on a topic that is critical to the future of all museums. City museums, more than any other topic specific cultural institutions, carry not only the seeds of memory but bear the responsibility of reflecting the increasingly diverse populations they serve. These museums, through their programs, bring relevance to their various publics, serve as places of discussion and civil discourse, and ultimately inform and enlighten their citizens.

Our Greatest Artefact: the City

This is our first eBook, published in December 2012.  It is a

collection of essays from our conferences in Istanbul, Shanghai and Berlin.  It can be downloaded from our home page.  It was designed, like our Newsletter, in Istanbul.  We are also hoping to produce a limited print edition.

We have also published the proceedings of our conferences in Seoul and Shanghai.  Copies can be obtained from our secretary.

Avenida Rio Branco, Rio de Janeiro

We hope to place more material in this section of our site.  In the meantime we have provided a reading list of books and articles on cities and on museums of cities.  It is far from being a definitive list and we are keen to receive additions from our members and from visitors to our site.
